On July 3-4, 2011, on the occasion of the 20th Anniversary of the Independence of Ukraine, Ambassador of Ukraine in Japan Mykola Kulinich made a working visit to Hiroshima at the invitation of the leading Buddhist orientation Sōka Gakkai International NGO linking more than 12 million people around the world.
In the frame of the visit the Ambassador met with governor of Hiroshima prefecture H. Yuzaki and newly elected mayor of Hiroshima K. Matsui. During the meeting with heads of prefecture and city, the issues of bilateral cooperation on implementation of the main tasks of the Kyiv Summit on Safe and Innovative Use of Nuclear Energy, which was held in April, 2011, the searching of new ways to enhance cooperation at the regional and municipal levels were discussed. In particular, they discussed the possibility of establishment of fraternal relations between Hiroshima prefecture and one of the regions of Ukraine.
Japanese leaders have expressed appreciation of the Independent Ukraine's policy aimed at achieving nuclear-free peace and the efforts of our state to enhance the nuclear non-proliferation. They also expressed the deep gratitude for the assistance of Ukraine to overcome the consequences of the Great East Japan Earthquake and the accident at the NPP «Fukushima-1».
On July 3, Ambassador of Ukraine Mykola Kulinich delivered a lecture «25 years since Chernobyl catastrophe. Challenges for Ukrainian people to overcome tragedy» at the D.Ikeda's Hiroshima Peace Center. Before the lecture at the solemn ceremony of awarding the Ukrainian diplomat of the «Hiroshima Peace Prize» was held. The same day Mykola Kulinich visited the Peace Memorial Museum dedicated to the nuclear explosion in 1945 and its consequences. He laid a wreath on the memorial to the victims of the bombing on behalf of the Embassy of Ukraine.
On July 4, the Ambassador of Ukraine met with the leaders and the editorial board of the largest regional newspaper Chogoku Shimbun (daily circulation of 2 mln. copies) and gave an interview on the experience of Ukraine to overcome Chornobyl disaster and the achievements during the Independence of Ukraine.
