Since the establishment of diplomatic relations (January 26, 1992), 64 bilateral documents have been signed between Ukraine and Japan (one of them has been terminated). By the principle of succession and by mutual consent the parties Ukraine and Japan also recognize bilateral treaties and agreements that were concluded and reached between Japan and the former USSR.
The key document defining the main areas of cooperation between the two states is the Joint Declaration on a Special Global Partnership, signed by the President of Ukraine Volodymyr Zelenskyy and Prime Minister of Japan Kishida Fumio on March 22, 2023, during the visit of the Head of the Japanese government to Ukraine https://www.president.gov.ua/en/news/spilna-zayava-pro-osoblive-globalne-partnerstvo-mizh-ukrayin-81717 .
