On October 11-12, 2018, Ukrainian delegation headed by Deputy Foreign Minister of Ukraine Vasyl Bodnar and Deputy Defence Minister of Ukraine on European Integration Anatolii Petrenko visited Japan for holding the first Ukrainian-Japanese consultations on security issues.
On the first day of the visit Ukrainian delegation met with Parliamentary Vice-Minister for Foreign Affairs of Japan Kenji Yamada. During the meeting the two sides discussed the current state and prospects of bilateral cooperation as well as the actual issues of global and regional security.
Ukrainian delegation also visited the Japan Maritime Self-Defense Force’s base «Yokosuka» and held a meeting with the Chief of the base Vice-Admiral Gojiro Watanabe.
On 12 October, 2018 the Ukrainian-Japanese consultations on security issues were held in Tokyo. The Japanese Side was represented by the Deputy Assistant Minister for Foreign Affairs, Deputy Director-General of European Affairs Bureau of the Ministry of Foreign Affairs Hideki Uyama and Director General for International Affairs of the Ministry of Defence of Japan Hideo Suzuki.
During the consultations the sides discussed a wide range of issues of mutual concern, in particular the global and regional security as well as prospects of expanding the bilateral cooperation in the sphere of security and defence.
At the same day Ukrainian delegation had meetings with Vice-Minister of Defense of Japan for International Affairs Ro Manabe, Parliamentary Vice-Minister of Defence of Japan Hiroshi Yamada, Vice Chief of Join Staff of Japan Self-Defense Force Takashi Motomatsu and Deputy Commissioner of Acquisition, Technology and Logistics Agency of Japan Hirokazu Hokazono.
During the visit the Memorandum between the Ministry of Defence of Ukraine and the Ministry of Defenсe of Japan on Cooperation and Exchanges in the Field of Defenсe was signed. The purpose of this Memorandum is to provide a framework for promoting bilateral cooperation and exchanges in the defense sphere.
