Nearly 70 reporters from international and Japanese news agencies, leading print and television media, representatives of political parties, political experts and business community of Japan, as well as foreign diplomatic missions attended this media event.
Head of Ukrainian diplomatic mission noted that while the farce, called "referendum", that took place in Crimea on March 16 on the separation of Ukraine and join Russia is “completely illegal and illegitimate”. He especially emphasized the separation and decisions of the "Putin regime" of Russia, which led to an escalation of the conflict, how different it is from opinions of Russians people, with whom Ukrainians have historical, cultural and family ties.
The decision on separation of the Crimea is a clear violation of international law and it created a dangerous precedent that shall affect the entire world order – the Ambassador emphasized it once again to attendants.
In addition, the Head of Ukrainian Diplomatic Mission said that currently the majority of countries have condemned the "Sunday action" that took place in Crimea, including Japan, where the Chief Cabinet Secretary of Japan Yoshihide SUGA on the morning press-conference in Tokyo said that "Japan doesn’t recognize referendum results and we encourage Russia to respect the rules of international law, respect for the sovereignty and territorial integrity of Ukraine and immediately suspend the annexation of the Crimea."
On this occasion, the Ambassador transmitted a signal to the international community, "Putin is not just Ukrainian problem, Putin is a problem of global dimension". The evidence of this is a vote of the UN Security Council, where Russia was the only country that opposed the solutions aimed at de-escalation of the situation in Ukraine". The Putin's regime” threatens not only the state sovereignty of Ukraine, but also peace and stability of Europe and the world in general.
In this sense, Ukraine counts on a solid and strong approach of the international community to make every effort and take all measures to stop Russia from interfering the internal affairs of Ukraine, from actual occupation and annexation of the Ukrainian territory.
During the press conference 15 questions were asked such as regarding expectations of further steps, reactions and sanctions of the international community, in particular the Government of Japan, the Russian aggression, a solution to stress on the Crimean peninsula , the means to prevent the Crimea to Russia, taking into account that this region is now under the control of forces loyal to Moscow, possible future prospects of economic and political relations between Kyiv and Moscow, and what are the possible limits to which Moscow can go based on Putin's ideology of "Great Russia ".
