Joint exploitation and modernization of Ukrainian GTS together with the EU and U.S.A. can possibly become a new page in energy relations between the EU, Ukraine, as a state which ratified Energy Charter, and Russia, as a principal supplier. The Prime Minister of Ukraine Arseniy Yatsenyuk announced following a meeting with the President of the European Commission Jose Manuel Barroso on Tuesday, May 13, in Brussels.

Arseniy Yatsenyuk stressed the Government of Ukraine appreciates efforts paid by the European Commission directed to political and economic support of Ukraine, particularly regarding energy efficiency and energy diversifying: “The agreement reached between Slovakia and Ukraine on reverse gas flows is a real action to support Ukraine and make it more independent in energy area”.

Moreover, he evaluated the efforts of the European Commission and the EU directed to implementation of the common energy policy. “We believe that in synergy with the EU we will be capable to facilitate forming a new energy policy. It is likely, in the nearest future there will be set up an energy union and Ukraine, which ratified Energy Charter and ready to implement the Third energy package, will have a chance to be engaged in this energy union”.

In addition the Head of Government expressed belief that in cooperation with the European partners and the U.S.A. Ukraine can jointly exploit and upgrade the Ukrainian gas transporting system.

“It will become a new page in energy relations between the European Union, Ukraine, as the state which ratified Energy Charter, and Russia, as a principal supplier,” Arseniy Yatsenyuk underlined.

The Prime Minister explained the Government of Ukraine is committed to implementation of the political part of the Association Agreement between Ukraine and the EU: “We recommend the new President to pay his first visit to Brussels and sign a free trade zone deal”.

Among essential challenges existing in front of Ukraine are security issues, according to the Head of the Government. “We must preserve peace and stability in Ukraine. We demand from Russia to condemn the so-called protesters, or rather terrorists, and spare no effort to stabilize the situation in Ukraine”.

“Russia will fail in making Ukraine the state which doesn’t exist,” Arseniy Yatsenyuk said.

According to him, among the main tasks in front of the Government of Ukraine are holding fair and transparent presidential elections. “We are expecting election of a new legitimate President and any attempts to hamper the elections will fail”.

Moreover, he stressed the Government of Ukraine evaluates a decision of the European Commission to send observers to Ukraine “to ensure Ukraine to have a voluntarily elected President”.

“By acting together, making concrete steps together we shall achieve success,” Arseniy Yatsenyuk said.
