23 December 2018, 13:18

On December 23rd Japanese kimono with Ukrainian design was presented in Tokyo. The spouse of Ambassador of Ukraine Mrs. Mariia Kharchenko attended reception on the occasion of the Birthday of the Emperor of Japan held at the Imperial Palace wearing the kimono.

According to Ambassador Dr. Ihor Kharchenko, there are two things that make this event significant: "First of all, it is a unique and the only kimono of a kind in the world, it is a work of art that reflects the blending of Japanese and Ukrainian cultures. This kimono is a real symbol of Ukrainian-Japanese friendship. Secondly, this year's reception is the last chance to congratulate the Emperor Akihito, who is planning to transfer his position to his heir next year."

It should be noted that Ukrainian kimono was prepared within the framework of the "Imagine OneWorld Kimono Project", which aims to create Japanese kimonos with national patterns from different countries in the context of the preparation of the cultural program of the Olympic Games 2020 in Tokyo. The main motifs of the Ukrainian kimono, which was created in one of the ancient cultural centers of Japan – the City of Kanazawa in Ishikawa Prefecture, are sunflowers, pysankas, storks, as well as the monument to Volodymyr the Great, the Baptist of the Kyivan Rus. The kimono was made by the master of "Kaga Yuzen" technique of silk dying using plant patterns, which is more than 500 years old and is representative of the region of Kaga (Ishikawa Prefecture) - Mr. M.Ota, whose workshop was visited by Ambassador Kharchenko on October 30th. Japanese belt for kimono "obi" was made in Kyoto. It took about eight months for the completion of kimono, and three months for the belt.

According to the representative of the project Mr. Y.Takakura, the consent to wear Japanese national costume specifically for visiting a protocol event at the Imperial Palace on the day of Japan's national holiday is "the highest of possible expressions of respect for the host country" by the Ukrainian representative and "evidence of a really friendly attitude towards Japan by Ukraine".

The Embassy of Ukraine in Japan expresses its sincere gratitude to Mr. Y.Takakura, director of "Imagine OneWorld Kimono Project", Ms. J.Mitsubayashi, project coordinator for the Ukrainian side, master of Ukrainian kimono Mr. M.Ota and sponsor - representative of “Komaba Planning Ltd.” Mr. S.Ide.
